This collaboration aims to enhance Komatsu's automated solutions, improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations.
Ouster, a provider of high-resolution lidar sensors and software solutions, has reached a multi-million dollar agreement with Komatsu, a mining equipment company, to supply 3D digital lidar sensors for Komatsu's autonomous mining equipment suite. This deal marks a shift towards an upgraded autonomous driving stack for both companies, aiming to replace traditional 2D lidar systems with Ouster's 3D lidar technology for superior perception and vehicle functionality. This collaboration is expected to enhance safety and efficiency in mining operations.
Komatsu's automation solutions aim to help global customers increase productivity, reduce total cost of ownership, and promote a zero-harm environment. This agreement is a significant advancement in Komatsu's commitment to advancing automation and safety in mining. By adopting Ouster's cutting-edge lidar technology, Komatsu can help its customers operate with greater efficiency, safety, and sustainability. The strategic partnership with Ouster provides Komatsu with early access to testing and development opportunities for future products, enabling the launch of equipment with enhanced capabilities and added value for customers.
Komatsu's future autonomous products will utilize a combination of long-range and short-range OS sensors from Ouster's REV7 series, expected to provide improved detection, navigation, and collision avoidance capabilities. Matt Reiland, Director of Automation Innovation Technology at Komatsu, stated: “The Ouster products developed through this collaboration can withstand shock, vibration, and temperature limitations, while providing the enhanced range and spatial perception needed for operation in harsh mining environments.” In February 2025, Komatsu and Bridgestone Corporation, a Japanese tire company, launched a proof-of-concept collaborative initiative focused on developing new solution services for mining customers.
