The FleetFlex feature of AutoMine Surface Fleet enables seamless and simultaneous control of multiple drills.

Equipment manufacturer Sandvik Mining has launched its AutoMine Surface Fleet solution, designed to shape the future of autonomous drill rig operations. This cutting-edge system aims to revolutionize the management of over 15 Sandvik i-series surface drill rigs. This feature allows for remote operation from any connected location, offering immense flexibility and reducing downtime, especially during shift changes.

The newly introduced FleetFlex feature in AutoMine Surface Fleet enables seamless synchronized control of multiple drill rigs, making it easier and more efficient to manage large drill fleets. The system's location-independent capabilities allow for continuous improvement and optimization of both on-site and remote control operations. AutoMine Surface Fleet also incorporates the AutoCycle function, which automates the drilling process and minimizes the need for manual intervention. This system covers a range of operations from stabilizing and precise positioning to drilling and moving to the next hole. This automated system ensures continuous drill rig operation and includes obstacle detection features to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Severi Eerola, Product Line Manager for Sandvik Mining's Surface Automation, stated: "The system is fully compatible with AutoMine Universal Station, allowing for simultaneous operation of both boom and rotary drill rigs even in harsh environments with challenging rock and weather conditions. By providing a fully integrated solution, mining operations can continue efficiently even during blasting intervals, ensuring optimal performance for every shift regardless of conditions." The operational benefits of AutoMine Surface Fleet have been confirmed through extensive field testing at the Boliden Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. Juha Ranta, Drilling Development Manager at Boliden Kevitsa, commented: "The geological conditions at Kevitsa are very complex, with mixed mineral compositions, ductile rock, and seasonal factors like water and frost, all of which affect equipment performance and drilling capabilities. The AutoMine Surface Fleet solution has helped us optimize our operations under demanding conditions. The operators' ability to seamlessly switch to remote control, combined with Sandvik's strong aftermarket support, has been crucial for maintaining high performance.

Furthermore, Sandvik's new solution aims to promote operator career development by providing opportunities for skill enhancement in real operational environments. Experienced personnel will strongly support this approach. In January 2025, Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, a division of the Sandvik Group, expanded its product line to include an electric version of its next-generation intelligent rotary blast hole drill rigs.
