This project will integrate tailings from the Ministro Hales, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic mines, with a projected operational lifespan of 20 years.
Weir Group has signed a £40 million ($54 million) contract with Codelco, Chile's national copper company, to provide a sustainable tailings transport solution for the expansion of the Talabre tailings dam in the Atacama region of Chile. The project aims to consolidate the tailings streams from three key mines, ensuring safer and more efficient operations. The project will integrate tailings from Ministro Hales, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic mines, with an expected operational life of 20 years. Tailings will be thickened to approximately 70% solids content, allowing for the reuse of process water and improving dam safety and stability.
Weir’s solution includes GEHO positive displacement pumps and WARMAN centrifugal pumps, capable of handling the high volume of solids tailings generated by the mines. The equipment integrates NEXT intelligent digital solutions and is designed to transport over 10,000 dry tonnes per hour, with higher energy efficiency compared to other available methods. The initial contracts will be signed in Q2 2025, representing the largest single order for Weir GEHO pumps. Weir’s commitment extends beyond equipment delivery, providing local after-sales support through its service center network in the region. Jon Stanton, Weir Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are delighted to secure these significant tailings management solution contracts, featuring our market-leading GEHO and WARMAN ranges, delivering energy-efficient tailings transport at scale. Our engineers have developed a differentiated solution specifically addressing Codelco’s stringent sustainability goals operating in the water-scarce climate and geological conditions of the Atacama region. Our extensive experience in large tailings operations and local presence means Codelco can benefit from the world-class service Weir is renowned for.”
Recently, Weir entered into a global collaboration with CiDRA, including a strategic investment, to accelerate the commercialization of CiDRA’s P29 technology. This collaboration aims to provide innovative solutions to address challenges facing the mining industry, such as declining ore grades, water scarcity, carbon emissions, and tailings management.
