Técnicas Reunidas will employ RARETECH technology to perform preliminary purification of rare-earth mineralization.
Australian mining company St. George Resources has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Brazilian firm United Technologies, covering processing and testing of rare-earth samples from the Araxá deposit in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Spanish company will leverage its RARETECH technology to carry out preliminary operations aimed at refining the rare-earth mineralization, including the production of mixed carbonates and rare-earth oxides, as well as the separation and fractionation of rare-earth elements (REE).
St. George Mining owns the entire Araxá deposit, which is the largest hard-rock rare-earth deposit in South America. The agreement with Técnicas Reunidas involves leveraging its technology to process rare-earth concentrates into carbonates. Técnicas Reunidas boasts extensive expertise in the recovery of critical raw materials and has deployed its RARETECH technology in projects across the United States, Japan, Australia, and other countries. Developed by Técnicas Reunidas through its internal Technology Development Division and Technology Center, RARETECH focuses on the recovery, processing, and refining of critical minerals, strategic metals, and other circular-economy products. In late February, the company also entered into an agreement with Australian firm Osmond Resources to provide RARETECH technology for the European Union’s first integrated rare-earth production project, located north of Jaén, Spain, spanning more than 220 square kilometers.
Técnicas Reunidas can also provide further support to St George Mining, including tasks such as designing process flow diagrams and industrial plant layouts for rare-earth processing. St George Mining aims to leverage this alliance to enter the European market, having previously established partnerships with U.S.-based REalloys and Brazil’s MagBras. John Prignias, CEO of St George Mining, stated: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Técnicas Reunidas to further evaluate the optimal processing route for the Araxa rare earths.” In December 2024, the company announced the formation of a partnership to advance downstream production of niobium and rare-earth elements from the Araxá project.
