Vicuña's mineral resources include the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits, with copper reserves reaching 13 million tons.
Lundin Mining and BHP's joint venture has made a landmark copper discovery at the Filo del Sol project in South America, considered one of the largest copper discoveries in the last thirty years. According to Lundin's press release, this discovery places Filo del Sol among the top ten copper resources globally. The mineral resources encompass the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits, boasting 13 million tonnes (Mt) classified as Measured and Indicated (M&I) copper resources, and 25 million tonnes of Inferred copper resources. Gold and silver reserves are also abundant, with 32 million ounces (moz) of M&I gold mineralization and inferred gold, 49 million ounces of inferred gold mineralization and inferred gold, 659 million ounces of M&I silver mineralization and inferred silver, and 808 million ounces of inferred silver mineralization and inferred silver.
The high-grade core of the Filo del Sol deposit contains 45,000 tonnes of copper, 9.6 million ounces of gold, and 259 million ounces of silver, with a total resource of 606 million tonnes (Mt) and a copper equivalent (CuEq) of 1.14%. The deposit also has an oxide cap suitable for heap leaching, including 4.34 million tonnes of mineralized and leached copper, containing 15,000 tonnes of copper, 3.9 million ounces of gold, and 35 million ounces of silver. Additionally, the high-grade oxide cap contains 1.81 million tonnes of high-grade mineralization, with a copper equivalent of 1.05%, 91.1 thousand tonnes of copper, 2.3 million ounces of gold, and 2.3 million ounces of silver. The deeper mineralization zone remains unexplored and beyond the current exploration boundary, indicating significant potential for expansion. Drilling 2 kilometers south of the Flamenco area also discovered mineralization outside the existing resource area.
For Lundin Mining, this significant discovery increases its total copper resources by 29% and inferred copper resources by 6.5 million tonnes. The Filo del Sol mining area covers approximately 10 square kilometers, extending 6.5 kilometers in length and 1.5 kilometers in width, showcasing immense potential to become a world-class copper, gold, and silver mine. Jack Lundin, President and CEO of the company, stated: “Filo del Sol is one of the most significant greenfield discoveries of the past 30 years, and it has been a remarkable journey for everyone involved. I congratulate the Filo team on achieving such extraordinary results, bringing the deposit to its current state. The preliminary data on mineral resources highlights its potential as one of the highest-grade undeveloped open-pit copper mines globally and one of the largest gold and silver resources. Filo del Sol and the Vicuña area have great promise to grow into world-class deposits, supporting a top-tier mining complex.” He also noted: “This significant discovery provides a solid foundation for our upcoming joint technical report, due in the first quarter of 2026, which will detail the project's development potential.” Additionally, in March 2025, Lundin Mining reached an exclusive agreement with Talon Metals to negotiate the potential acquisition of a 70% interest in the Boulderdash and Roland nickel-copper exploration assets.
