Endolith microbes outperform traditional heap leaching methods, offering new potential for previously uneconomical mineral waste.
Endolith has achieved a milestone in trials extracting copper from low-grade sulfide ores, significantly improving copper recovery rates. This trial was conducted in partnership with BHP's innovation arm Think & Act Differently (TAD) and facilitated by Unearthed. Endolith's microbial performance outperforms traditional heap leaching methods, unlocking new potential from previously uneconomical mineral waste. This development could have a profound impact on the mining industry, especially considering the projected doubling of global copper consumption by 2035.
It is estimated that 70% of copper reserves are locked in low-grade or complex ores, and Endolith's microbial platform offers a solution to access these resources. The platform uses advanced bioengineering and AI-optimized processing to not only increase yields but also reduce environmental impact. It is designed to integrate with existing mining infrastructure, saving costs and eliminating the need for harmful chemical leaching processes.
Endolith CEO Liz Dennett said: “This demonstrates what can be achieved when the world’s oldest miners (microbes) are set to work on one of today’s biggest challenges." Supported by the TAD project, we have proven a solution that can unlock vast copper resources in a scalable, low-impact way, helping to secure critical mineral supply chains for decades to come." Endolith's trials focused on primary sulfide ores containing less than 1% chalcopyrite and pyrite, which are typically difficult to process. Column tests simulating field conditions showed Endolith's method recovers copper faster and more completely across a range of temperatures. Unearthed co-founder Holly Bridgwater said: “At Unearthed, we exist to connect bold ideas with significant industry challenges. This collaboration is critical to unlocking the next generation of mining innovation.”
