According to Reuters, citing government sources, Guinea has revoked the licenses of up to 53 mining companies, signaling a rise in resource nationalism. This trend in the region emerged following military coups in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso since 2020. The revoked licenses cover a range of operations, including bauxite, gold, diamonds, and graphite.
However, industry insiders say the companies involved are not major producers in Guinea's mining sector, which is dominated by large multinational corporations. The government has not disclosed the reasons for revoking the licenses, and there is no indication that large mining companies will face similar actions. A source in the Ministry of Mines hinted: "We have been working to clean up the land registration system. This cleanup can be considered part of the same framework."
Guinea is known for possessing the world's largest bauxite reserves, a key component in aluminum production, and is a significant exporter of gold and iron ore. According to a notice published by the Ministry of Mines and Geology on LinkedIn, the country exported approximately 146.4 million tons of bauxite in 2024. Despite the license revocations, Guinea's major bauxite producers are still expected to exceed 200 million tons of output this year, a 35% increase over last year's record production. The report notes that while the license cancellations are in line with regulatory practices, they can also be seen as a warning to mining operators. Earlier this month, Guinea initiated proceedings to revoke the mining license of the UAE's Global Aluminum Company.
