This model is designed to enhance production efficiency and reliability, and is based on the DD422i model.
Swedish engineering group Sandvik has launched the next-generation automated development drill rig, the DD423i, marking a significant advancement in underground mining technology. Designed to enhance productivity and reliability, this new model builds on the DD422i. The DD423i features the innovative SB75i dual-tilt-arm system, delivering 34.5% greater hole coverage and 48% improved lateral cutting performance.
It is specifically designed to enhance operational reach in confined spaces, such as room-and-pillar mining environments. Automated boom movements and built-in collision-avoidance features are engineered to increase drilling cycle speed, safety, and accuracy. Field tests conducted at Boliden in the Skellefteå region of Sweden demonstrated that the DD423i achieved machine availability exceeding 95%. The redesigned cab improves operator safety and comfort, with a 55% wider field of view, reduced noise levels, and enhanced dust control. Improved maintainability and easier access to critical components further accelerate maintenance and minimize downtime. The rig’s advanced control system supports intuitive operation, catering to operators of varying skill levels. The DD423i integrates seamlessly with Sandvik’s digital mining solutions—including Sandvik iSURE, DrillConnect, iNav total station navigation, My Sandvik remote monitoring, and the Newtrax mining data platform—enabling connected, data-driven development drilling. “The launch of the DD423i marks a significant milestone for Sandvik,” said Simon Morrissey, Product Manager for Drilling Rigs at Sandvik. “The DD422i set the benchmark for development drilling in 2015, and its success over the past decade has shaped the entire industry. The DD423i both carries forward this legacy and represents a future-oriented rig, engineered to deliver superior performance, automation, and safety.”
Last month, Sandvik Mining launched My Sandvik Geo, a new cloud-based digital service designed to transform drilling data into actionable geological and geotechnical insights.
