SELT is expected to run from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026.

EnviroCopper (ECL) has received approval to conduct a Site Environmental Leach Test (SELT) at its Kapunda project in South Australia. Australian Stock Exchange-listed exploration company Alligator Energy holds a 15.6% stake in EnviroCopper. The trial aims to validate in-situ recovery (ISR) technology for copper extraction, marking a significant step towards establishing a new copper ISR mine. EnviroCopper recently received approval from the Department of Energy and Mining for a 90-day underground SELT.

Alligator Energy CEO Greg Hall said: “This is exciting news for both EnviroCopper and Alligator. The well design, well pad and associated earthworks for the Kapunda test well are complete, with further preparations underway.” We look forward to observing the trial and ECL receiving results, which will inform and further develop their ISR toolkit under development. Once validated, ISR copper mines have significant expansion opportunities in suitable environments. This work is critical to confirming the economic viability of using ISR for copper extraction at Kapunda. If successful, this trial will pave the way for feasibility studies and mining lease applications.

Funding for this critical testing phase is provided by BHP through its subsidiary OZ Minerals under a research agreement signed in August 2022. The SELT is scheduled to commence in Q4 2025 and continue into Q1 2026. Alligator Energy highlighted the strategic complementarity of its investment in ECL, including board representation and collaboration through a technical advisory committee. ECL is currently in investment discussions with international investors who have a strong interest in copper ISR. These discussions aim to secure substantial funding to support further work at Kapunda and the Alford West projects. EnviroCopper Managing Director Leon Faulkner said: “This is another strategic regulatory win for EnviroCopper, enabling the junior company to explore potential energy metals ISR projects within exploration licenses, maximizing time and cost savings. We look forward to applying this ISR template to our other projects at Alford West and future projects.”
