The Land Management Bureau will provide lease areas rich in mineable coal resources in these states.
The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is advancing competitive coal lease sales in Alabama, Montana, and Utah. These sales are part of the Trump administration's efforts under Executive Orders 14241 and 14261 to increase mineral production and revitalize the coal industry. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will offer lease areas in these states that contain abundant recoverable coal resources, which are vital to the U.S. steel manufacturing and energy sectors. In Alabama, the BLM will offer two lease parcels in Tuscaloosa County, covering approximately 14,050 acres. These parcels are estimated to contain 53 million tons of metallurgical coal. The sealed bid sale is scheduled for September 30, 2025. The BLM will also offer about 120 acres in Emery County, Utah, known as the Little Eccles Tract, estimated to contain 1.29 million tons of recoverable coal. This sale is conducted at the request of Skyline Mine operator Canyon Fuel Company. The sealed bid deadline is October 1, 2025, with the sale occurring on the same day.
Additionally, the BLM will sell 1,262 acres in Big Horn County, Montana, estimated to contain approximately 167.5 million tons of recoverable coal. This lease sale responds to an application from Navajo Transitional Energy Company, the operator of the Spring Creek Mine. If approved, the lease rights could extend the mine's operation until 2051. The auction is scheduled for October 6, 2025, with the sealed bid deadline on October 3.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated: "Coal has long been a pillar of America's energy and industrial strength. By advancing these lease sales, we are creating high-paying jobs, supporting local communities, and ensuring the maintenance of America's strong resource base. President Trump's leadership puts American workers first and ensures our nation's energy future is built on reliable domestic resources. The BLM manages these resources under the Mineral Leasing Act and the coal provisions of the Build Back Better Act. Each sale undergoes federal review and public participation, considering environmental factors and providing opportunities for public comment. Detailed bidding instructions and terms for these sales will be published in the Federal Register in the coming weeks. The U.S. Department of the Interior recently approved Hurricane Creek Mining Company to conduct coal mining operations in Tennessee, with coal production expected to reach 1.8 million tons by 2034."
