According to a report by the BNAmericas website, Brazil has launched an agenda aimed at expanding domestic uranium production and hopes to attract greater participation from private companies.

The Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES) is seeking information and hopes to identify companies interested in providing consulting services for the expansion of uranium production by Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB).

INB stated, “This is one of the steps under the 2024 Uranium Production Expansion Program (Pró-Urânio Program), aimed at expanding and accelerating the exploration of new ore deposits. BNDES will explore models for establishing partnerships with mining companies.”

The INB cooperation intention includes five mining areas:

(1) The Amorinópolis uranium mine located in the municipalities of Amorinópolis and Iporá, Goiás State;

(2) The Espinharas uranium mine in the municipality of São José de Espinharas, Paraíba State;

(3) The Figueiras uranium mine in the municipality of Sapoema, Paraná State;

(4) The Rio Preto uranium mine located in the municipalities of Cavalcante, Colinas do Sul, Goiás, and Arraias in Tocantins State;

(5) The Lagoa Real uranium mine in the municipality of Caetité, Bahia State.

The plan will boost Brazil’s uranium production, ensure the fuel supply for the Angra 1 and Angra 2 nuclear power plants, and create conditions for exporting surplus uranium. INB stated that this increased-production initiative will also reduce external dependence by establishing partnerships at other strategic stages of the nuclear fuel cycle.

INB noted that “consulting firms interested in participating in the RFI must submit to BNDES, in the designated sections of the form, a technical qualification matrix, a questionnaire containing service estimates (taking into account acting as a consortium), and contributions to the technical specifications, as well as suggestions on the content of the draft technical specification clauses.”

The requested information must be sent to BNDES by December 15, 2025.
