The incident caused restricted evacuation routes for seven contractor workers at the mine.

Due to a large amount of wet material blocking the mine passage, Freeport-McMoRan has announced the suspension of operations at the Grasberg block cave mine in Central Papua Province, Indonesia. This incident has restricted the evacuation route for seven contractor workers at the mine. The current primary task is the safe evacuation of these seven workers, whose locations are known and believed to be safe.

The company stated that efforts are currently underway to clear the blockage and provide support to the trapped workers. Freeport-McMoRan Chairman Richard C. Adkerson and President and CEO Kathleen Quirk said, "The safety and well-being of our employees is always our top priority. Our team is working hard to move the team members to a safe area as soon as possible."

The Grasberg block cave mine is one of the world's most important copper and gold mines, managed by Freeport-McMoRan through its subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), in which it holds a 48.76% stake. The mine uses remote-controlled equipment to extract ore and also produces silver. Freeport-McMoRan's profit for the first quarter (Q1) of this year slightly exceeded expectations. However, the company's net profit attributable to common shareholders declined, dropping from $473 million (equivalent to $0.32 per share) in the same period last year to $352 million (equivalent to $0.24 per share) for the three months ending March 31. In the first quarter, Freeport-McMoRan's total consolidated copper production was 868 million pounds, down from 1.09 billion pounds in the same period last year.
