Angola's Minister of Mining, Diamantino Azevedo, announced that Angola's first large-scale copper mining project, the Tete Copper Mine, is set to begin production soon.

According to Reuters, this marks a significant move for the oil-dependent nation as it seeks economic diversification by entering the clean energy mineral sector. The Tete Lulo copper mine is owned by China's Shining Star Icarus Company, with an investment of US$250 million (RMB 1.78 billion). It is expected to produce 25,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually over the first two years. Initially, the mine will operate as an open-pit operation before transitioning to underground mining starting from the second half of 2026. Citing Azevedo’s remarks at the Mining Conference held in the capital Luanda, the agency stated: "I am honored to announce the inauguration ceremony of the Tete Lulo Mine, which will take place in just a few days." Azevedo added, "This event signifies the commencement of production at Angola’s first-ever underground mine for this critically important metal." Meanwhile, other mining companies such as Ivanhoe Mines and Anglo American Group are also eyeing Angola’s vast potential for copper mining development.

In 2023, after obtaining greenfield exploration rights from Angola’s National Agency for Mineral Resources, Ivanhoe Mines is set to commence mineral exploration activities. This allocation covers a greenfield exploration area of 22,195 square kilometers across the provinces of Moxico and Cuando Cubango in Angola. Copper, along with other battery metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, are considered critical to the transition toward renewable energy. Angola’s entry into copper mining underscores its commitment to reducing reliance on oil revenues and strengthening its mineral resources sector.
